The 6th Annual Sammamish Shoot-Out
Saturday July 2, 2011

Division Championship Matches & Winners

It was a great day for Chumash lacrosse: Blue skies and sunshine, tunes from Brady's masterful playlist, and some really terrific 3v3 lacrosse in every division. Stick skills, crisp ball movement and quick shots won games. The fans were treated to amazing stick work at every level.  Congrats to all!

The top teams were seeded into playoffs after pool rounds, and the division winners had to win as many as three playoff games straight to take the title of Sammamish Shoot-Out 2011 Champions!

Defending in the outer crease

We've received some thoughtful questions about the rules regarding defending in the outer crease. First, here is the intent of the rules:
1. To prevent defenders from blocking shots, acting as goalies.
2. To not give an advantage to defenders using the crease that the offense does not enjoy.

Offensive players can do everything in the outer crease you do on the rest of the field except shoot and stand. Similarly, defensive players can do everything in the outer crease except block shots and stand. Specifically, offensive and defensive players must not set up position in the outer crease.  The offensive player is expected to move immediately through the outer crease, with our without the ball. The defender is expected to follow the offensive player.

Situation: A defender legally checks the ball loose from an offensive player driving through the outer crease.
Ruling:  Legal. It is legal to play lacrosse through the outer crease.

Situation: A defender anticipates a pass, and runs into the outer crease to intercept the pass.
Ruling: Legal. It is legal to play lacrosse through the outer crease.

Situation: An offensive player is set up on the edge of the outer crease. A defender marks the offensive player with a position that has one foot inside the outer crease line.
Ruling: Technical foul, crease violation. Defenders must not take up defensive positions inside the outer crease.

Situation: An offensive player without the ball moves inside the outer crease, and sets up there to take a pass. The marking defender follows the offensive player into the crease and also stops.
Ruling: Offensive crease violation; turnover.  No player may set up position inside the outer crease. The marking defender is presumed to be following the offensive player who is in the outer crease illegally.

The rules are similar "3 in the key" rules, but Chumash outer crease rules apply to both the offense and defense, and there is no clock.

If you are in the outer crease, you must be moving through it.  You can't shoot from inside the outer crease, and you can't block shots from inside the outer crease.

Check-in questions

Q: Our fist game isn't until 10am, but check-in starts at 8am. Does the whole team need to be there at 8am?
A:  No. Your team needs to be checked in 30 minutes before your first game, but one person (say the team manager) can do this for the whole team. However, you must turn in all your waivers at check-in, all at one time. Your roster for the day will be determined by the signed waivers provided at check-in.

Schedules posted

Check "Essential Links" for the detailed schedules for SSO 2011.

A couple of notes for the High School divisions:

  • Girls: Your games now start at 2pm. Check in before 1:30pm.
  • Boys: Your schedules will be posted in the next day or two.

Schedule and other important news about SSO 2011

With the biggest Sammamish Shoot-Out ever just 5 days away, we’re working hard to get everything ready to go. The fields are in great shape, and the weather forecast is looking really good, so we’re looking forward to a terrific day of 3v3 lacrosse.

Once your division starts playing, you will have a game every 60-90 minutes. Back-to-back games will be very rare in the schedule, but even in the biggest divisions you won’t have a lot of time between games.

There will be lots to do on-site between games: Blue Ridge BBQ will be there with Dave dishing up his famous burgers, dogs, and pulled pork. We'll also have Jamba Juice, Breakaway Sports, the Washington Stealth, STiX lacrosse, and of course, our tournament wear provider, Northwest Design, where you can buy some cool Sammamish Shoot-Out shirts and sweatshirts, and pick up your free tournament t-shirt.

The Schedule  (Subject to change, of course!  Do check back often.)
Here's when you need to be at Pine Lake Middle School and when your division plays:

Boys HS -- Check in by 2:00pm; games run 2:30pm to 6pm
Girls 3/4 -- Check in starts at 10am; games run 11:30am to 5pm

We should have team-by-team schedules posted on the blog on Wednesday or Thursday night.  We’ll send you an email when we do.

Essential Reminders:
  • Every player must have a signed waiver form. NO EXCEPTIONS. Here’s the link (again), or you can find it in the Essential Links section of the blog.
  • Bring lots and lots of water Saturday. It's going to be hot. There is no potable water available on site, so you’ll have to bring your own.
  • Get familiar with Sammamish Shoot-Out rules. There are some very important differences between 3v3 Chumash lacrosse and full-field lacrosse. Get to know them.
  • Parking is VERY LIMITED at PLMS, but extremely plentiful (459 spaces!) at the South Sammamish Park & Ride just across 228th from the school at 228th Avenue Southeast and Issaquah Pine Lake Road Southeast. Please do not park at Pine Lake Village shopping center. There is a Map to PLMS in the Essential Links section of the blog.

Updated rules for 2011

We've clarified a couple of rules for 2011, in particular the goaltending rule and the rules regarding delay of game at the beginning of a period. Be sure to read them in advance here. You can also use the link under the "Essential Links" section on the right side of this page.
